IMPORTANT NOTICE

Due to the growing demand for telephone lines for business and residential use in the 705 region there will be a new 249 area code introduced on Jan. 15, 2011. This new area code will be an "overlay" which means it will co-exist with the 705 area code and cover the same geographic area.

This means all customers in the 705 region will need to dial 10 digits when making local calls. On Jan. 15, 2011 any local calls dialled with 7 digits will be intercepted and an automated announcement will advise you that effective March 5, 2011 all local calls need to be dialled with 10 digits.

The ability to dial local calls with 10 digits is available now, and we suggest that you start changing your telephone and fax speed dials as soon as possible. Also any devices that access a line to dial will need the area code added if they are dialling a local number. This would include: telephone systems, fax machines, modems (internet, banking, etc.), debit/credit card machines, alarm systems, pager systems, cellular phones, etc.

Effective March 5, 2011 you will be forced to dial 10 digits or your call will not be connected. We would suggest that you work toward the Jan. 15, 2011 date since automated dialling machines such as the ones listed above will probably not react properly with the automated announcement intercept.

To ease the transition you should start educating your employees and start providing your full 10 digit number when giving out phone, fax, cellular and pager numbers as soon as possible.
